Milliput is a British brand of two-part epoxy putty that has been a modelling and repair workshop essential since 1968. Created by Jack and Lena Rickman in Wales, Milliput was initially developed for DIY and car body repair applications. By the early 1970s, the company recognised that modellers and sculptors were adopting the product for their own purposes, and began steering development towards the hobby market. Today, Milliput is one of the most widely used putties in scale modelling, miniature sculpting and wargaming worldwide.
Each pack contains two separate sticks, one of resin and one of hardener, which are mixed in equal parts. Once mixed, Milliput can be shaped, sculpted and smoothed with water before it sets. It cures fully in approximately three to four hours at room temperature and, once hardened, can be sanded, filed, drilled, tapped, carved and painted. Milliput is available in several grades: Standard (yellow-grey) for general-purpose filling and modelling, Silver Grey for applications not requiring fine detail, Superfine White for delicate work such as ceramic restoration and detailed miniature sculpting, Black for dark surfaces and jewellery, and Terracotta for outdoor repairs. Milliput is non-shrinking, heat-resistant and will even set underwater, making it exceptionally versatile.

- Milliput Grades and Colours
Milliput is produced in five grades, each suited to different applications. Standard Yellow-Grey is the all-purpose grade for general modelling, filling and repair work. Silver Grey offers a slightly finer grain with a smooth finish. - What is Milliput used for in modelling?
Milliput is used for gap filling between kit parts, sculpting custom details and figures, creating terrain and textures for dioramas, converting and modifying existing models, and repairing broken or damaged parts. Its ability to be smoothed with water before curing and machined after curing makes it one of the most versatile modelling materials available.
- Which Milliput grade should I use?
Standard Yellow-Grey is the best all-round choice for general modelling work, including gap filling and basic sculpting. Superfine White is recommended for detailed figure sculpting, fine repairs and any application where a smooth, fine-grained finish is required.
- How long does Milliput take to cure?
Milliput cures to a rock-hard finish in approximately three to four hours at room temperature. Curing time can be reduced by applying heat. Full hardness is reached after 24 hours, after which the putty can be drilled, filed, sanded and painted.
- Can Milliput be smoothed?
Yes. While still soft, Milliput can be smoothed with water applied via a brush or wet finger. This makes it easy to achieve clean, smooth finishes before the putty cures, reducing the amount of sanding needed afterwards.
